Tarot Readers, Red Flags & Bullshit: How to Know Who to Trust
Updated: Oct 5
Let's be clear about something: owning a tarot deck does not automatically make someone intuitive, psychic, spiritually gifted, or qualified to guide anybody through anything. You can buy a tarot deck on Tuesday and have "Psychic Tarot Reader 🔮✨" in your bio by Wednesday. That doesn't mean every tarot reader is full of it either. There are incredibly intuitive readers who take their work seriously, genuinely want to help people, and have spent years developing their relationship with tarot and their spiritual abilities. Unfortunately, there are also people who know exactly how vulnerable someone can be when they're heartbroken, grieving, confused, scared, or desperate for answers, and they'll happily turn that vulnerability into a business model.

So how do you tell the difference? There isn't one magical test that proves whether someone is legitimate, but there are behaviors you should pay attention to before handing someone your money, your trust, and especially your spiritual authority.
🚩 "There's a Curse on You... But I Can Remove It for $500"
Let's start with one of the oldest tricks in the book. You get a reading, everything seems normal, and suddenly the reader becomes concerned. There's dark energy around you. Someone cursed you. Your ancestors are angry. Your relationship is spiritually blocked. And conveniently, the person who discovered this terrifying problem can remove it for another $300, $500, $1,000, or whatever number they pull out of the spiritual ATM.
This doesn't mean spiritual cleansing, candle work, ancestral work, or other spiritual services are automatically scams. Many legitimate practitioners offer those services. The red flag is using fear to pressure you into buying them. A responsible practitioner can tell you what they believe they're seeing without making you terrified that something horrible will happen unless you immediately pay them more money. Fear should never be the sales funnel.
🚩 They Guarantee Specific Outcomes
Be cautious when someone guarantees that your ex WILL return, you'll definitely get married, you're absolutely getting that job, you'll become wealthy, or something will happen on an exact date with complete certainty. Tarot can show patterns, possibilities, obstacles, behaviors, and potential outcomes, but human beings still make decisions. Circumstances change. New information enters situations. And sometimes? The reader is simply wrong.
Someone promising absolute certainty about everything may be telling you what keeps you paying rather than what they're genuinely interpreting.
🚩 Every Reading Creates Another Emergency
You booked a love reading. Somehow you leave needing a cleansing. Then the cleansing reveals an ancestral blockage. The ancestral blockage requires candle work. The candle work uncovers another attachment. Now you need another reading.
At some point, we have to ask why your spiritual problems apparently have a subscription plan. 😂 Additional services aren't automatically suspicious. Sometimes one service genuinely leads someone to realize another area needs attention. The problem is when every interaction creates another urgent problem that only this practitioner can solve. That's not spiritual empowerment. That's dependency.
🚩 They Want You Dependent on Them
A tarot reader should not become your replacement brain. Should I text him? Should I apply for this job? Should I buy this? Should I leave my house today? If a reader encourages you to consult them constantly about ordinary life decisions, something is wrong.
Tarot should help strengthen your relationship with your own intuition and decision-making. A good reader may provide perspective, but ultimately your life still belongs to you. Anyone who needs you to believe you cannot navigate your life without them has way too much power in that relationship.
🚩 They Fish for the Reading
There's nothing inherently wrong with a reader asking questions. Context can actually make a reading more useful. But there's a difference between asking for context and having you provide enough information that the reader can simply repeat your story back to you.
Pay attention to excessive leading questions like, "He's been distant lately, hasn't he?" or "You've been having problems with someone close to you?" These statements can apply to A LOT of people. A vague statement isn't automatically proof of fraud, but if you're doing most of the talking while the reader keeps reshaping your information into "psychic insights," use your discernment. You shouldn't have to perform your own reading.
🚩 "Spirit Said It, So You Can't Question Me"
This one bothers me. A spiritual reader should NEVER be above questioning simply because they claim the information came from Spirit, ancestors, guides, intuition, or the cards.
You are allowed to say, "That doesn't resonate with me." You're allowed to ask how they reached an interpretation. You're allowed to disagree. You're allowed to leave. A reader doesn't become the unquestionable authority over your life because they shuffled some cards. If someone gets angry, defensive, or tries to frighten you because you questioned their interpretation, there's your red flag.
But What If a Tarot Reader Gets Something Wrong?
This is important because the internet has created this weird expectation that a "real psychic" should have a 100% accuracy rate. That's not realistic. A legitimate tarot reader can misinterpret a card, misunderstand intuitive information, read a potential outcome that changes, or simply have an off day. They are still human beings interpreting information through a human brain.
One inaccurate statement doesn't automatically mean someone is fake. What matters is the overall pattern. Do they acknowledge uncertainty? Can they admit when something isn't clear? Do they force an interpretation when the cards aren't making sense? Do they constantly rewrite incorrect predictions afterward to make themselves appear right? There's a huge difference between being imperfect and being dishonest.
Accuracy Isn't the Only Thing You Should Judge
This may be one of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing spiritual practitioners. A reader tells you three things they couldn't possibly know, and you're shocked. Now suddenly EVERYTHING they say afterward must be true.
Not necessarily. Someone demonstrating impressive accuracy doesn't mean you should turn your discernment off. Pay attention to how they treat you, whether they respect boundaries, and whether they're creating fear, dependency, or urgency. Accuracy matters, but character matters too.
What Does a Trustworthy Tarot Reader Look Like?
There isn't one personality type, reading style, spiritual practice, or aesthetic that makes someone legitimate. Some readers are extremely mystical. Some are practical. Some use spreads. Some don't. Different doesn't mean fake.
A trustworthy reader generally won't manufacture fear to make money, promise impossible guarantees, or make you feel incapable of making your own decisions. They should be able to acknowledge uncertainty, respect your boundaries, explain their interpretations when appropriate, and admit when they simply don't know something. Most importantly, they shouldn't need you dependent on them to prove their value. Sometimes the most trustworthy thing a spiritual practitioner can tell you is, "I'm not getting a clear answer on that."
Keep Your Spiritual Authority
Tarot can be an incredible tool. A good reader can help you see something differently, recognize patterns you've been missing, validate something you've already been sensing, or bring information forward that gives you something meaningful to consider. But no tarot reader should own your intuition. Not me. Not your favorite TikTok psychic. Not the reader with 500,000 followers. Not the person who's been reading tarot for thirty years. Nobody.
Listen. Ask questions. Observe. Use your discernment. And if someone tells you there's a terrible generational curse destroying your love life but GOOD NEWS, they accept Cash App... Maybe keep your wallet closed. 😂🔮
Understanding Your Intuition
It's essential to cultivate your intuition alongside seeking guidance. Intuition is your inner compass. It can help you navigate life's challenges, especially when you feel lost. Trusting your gut is a skill that can be developed over time.
The Role of Reflection
Self-reflection plays a crucial role in personal growth. Take time to journal your thoughts and feelings after a reading. This practice can help clarify your emotions and deepen your understanding of the messages you receive.
Building a Support System
Surround yourself with supportive individuals who encourage your growth. Whether friends, family, or a community, having a network can provide additional perspectives and insights.
Embracing Uncertainty
Life is inherently uncertain. Embracing this uncertainty can lead to greater peace. Understand that not every answer will come immediately. Sometimes, the journey is just as important as the destination.
In the end, tarot can be a valuable tool for self-discovery and guidance. However, it's crucial to maintain your spiritual authority. Trust yourself, ask questions, and be discerning. Remember, you are the ultimate authority in your life.
